I Have Seen the Face of Flood-Control and it is RICE!
This will be explained later. Now the explanation-
No this is not the cement anchor that Scott Peterson used to sink his wife's body to the bottom of San Francisco Bay, though if it had been used, Lacy would still be down there and Scott would be playing golf in Mexico. This bowl of "cerebellum" is the last remnants of last weekend's Crockpot Chicken and Rice Soup. The ingredients were added to the crockpot in the exact amounts set forth in the recipe. Chicken breasts, copious amounts of chicken broth and water and spices were simmered on low for 6 hours until the chicken fell apart on it's own. The next required step was to turn the pot up to high, bring the watery mess to a boil, add 3 cups of rice, then turn the pot down again. This was done per instructions.
Nothing in the recipe indicated that what would happen next would be the cooking equivalent of a "hate-crime." A half hour after adding the rice, I removed the lid to discover approximately 15 lbs. of "rice-brick," sufficient to provide ballast for a couple of large frigates. There was no longer an atom of water in the pot. Reflexively, I added about a quart of water to quench the thirst of this creature, then returned to whatever it was I was doing. An hour later, I returned to the pot to find that the same scenario had played out again-no water, just a larger rice-brick. Another attempt to bring soup-like consistency to the mix brought the same results. Then I surrendered-I scooped the glop into a bowl and put in in the fridge, thinking that without the application of heat, it's growth would be stopped or at least stunted-I was severely mistaken. The thing continued to mutate and evolve into a larger brick even when water was added to the chilled mixture.
I ate on this twice a day for a week and the above-photo is what still remains. I put a dollop of rice-brick into a bowl, added enough water to make it a soup and nuke it for 3 minutes on high. I have to say it was delicious-and filling! Afte eating it, I could feel the digested mixture still expanding in my stomach.
I will amend the recipe to add: Serves 60.
